RPL offers full length practice ACT tests administered by Sylvan several times per year. Practice tests are scheduled 6-8 weeks before an ACT Test date, depending on proctor and room availability.  Check the Library Events Calendar for test dates.

Who gives the test?

The practice ACT is administered by proctors from Sylvan, not library staff.

How do we sign up?

You can sign up online via our events calendar, or you can call the Youth Services Department to register.  If you provide us with an email address, you will receive a registration confirmation and reminder emails.

Who can take the Practice ACT?

The Practice ACT is open to teens in grades 7-12. Teens do not need to attend a school in the Rochester public school district, or have a library card.

How does it work? (Is there a break, can we bring food, water, etc)

This is a full length practice test, covering all of the regular multiple choice sections on the ACT test. You will NOT be doing a practice essay. The proctors will start as close to the start time as possible, and the test takes approximately 4 hours. Like the regular ACT, there is one 15-minute break part way through. You may bring a snack and water to have during the break.

What do we need to bring?

You should bring #2 pencils, an approved calculator and water/snack if you would like (there will be a short break for a snack).

Where is the test exactly?

Practice ACTs are typically held in Meeting Room C or the Auditorium. Staff will be near the Library entrance to check you in and direct you to the room, or you can ask at the front desk for directions.

What time does the test start?

We typically begin practice tests at noon (but check the start time on the specific test you register for!). We try to start as close to on time as possible, so it’s best if you can arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to get checked in and find a seat. We will fill any empty seats once the test time has passed with those from the waiting list.

When will we get the results?

Sylvan will notify you of your results via EMAIL, usually within 2 weeks of the testing date. Sylvan will use the email address that you sign in with on the day of the test so it is very important to write legibly, and to use an email address that you check. It is okay to use a parent’s email address if you don’t have one that you check regularly. Depending on the test date, Sylvan may offer the option to schedule a 10 minute meeting with a tutor to discuss your results here at the library.

Help! I put my email address down and I didn't get results.  Now what?

Contact Sarah Joynt, Teen Librarian in the Youth Services Department.  She will contact Sylvan and have results resent.

Does it cost anything?

No. The practice ACT is free.

Can we take it again later?

Yes. We offer the practice ACT 4-5 times per year, and you may sign up more than once. Sylvan has a limited number of practice tests, but we cannot guarantee that you will take a different test the next time you sign up.

I’m on the waiting list, how will I be notified if there is a spot for me? When will I be notified?

You will be notified via email and phone if a spot for you opens up. We will try to notify you as quickly as possible but sometimes we receive last minute cancellations. Practice tests often fill up with a waiting list, so we appreciate a confirmation phone call to let us know whether you are still interested in the spot so that we can fit as many teens as possible into this program. Because last minute cancellations always happen, waiting list participants are welcome to try to come on the testing day, and they will be allowed to take the test based on their position on the wait list as space is available. We will fill the seats first with teens on the main list and then we will fill any empty seats with waiting list teens, and finally, walk-ins.

When will you offer a practice SAT Test?

We try to offer a practice SAT test once per year, usually during the summer.
