Frequently Asked Questions

Who can access the downloadable audio, music and video collection?
This service is offered by the Rochester Public Library — the City of Rochester and Olmsted County pay for it for its citizens and the cost is based on registered users at the Rochester Public Library.  This is not a service paid for by SELCO.

However, as a borrower in the SELCO region, you may come to the Rochester Public Library and register your card with the Rochester Public Library.  Once your card is registered with the Rochester Public Library then you may be able to access the digital account.

Do you have textbooks for my school classes? If not, can you get them for me from another library?
Public libraries generally do not purchase textbooks, though we may have other books and information that will help you with your classes. College, university, and school libraries may own textbooks to support their educational programs.

We can certainly try requesting textbooks from other libraries, but they are often being used by students on campus so they may be unavailable for us to borrow through Interlibrary Loan. Also, be aware that books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan may have shorter checkout periods and may not be able to be renewed.

Do you offer test proctoring services?

The library does not offer test proctoring services. These are some options for students who need a proctor.

Do you have a fax machine?
The library does not have a public fax machine. In emergencies, we can do a fax for $3.00/page. Local copy shops and supermarkets will often offer faxing services.

Do you have digital projectors, DVD/VHS players, MP3 players to rent?

The library does not have digital projectors, DVD/VHS players to rent or borrow. We do have DVD/VHS viewing stations at the library on the first floor for watching videos during your visit to the library. We do have MP3 players that can be checked out.

How do I look at a Ebscohost ebook (formerly Netlibrary) online outside of the library?
You need a library card to view these books from outside the library. Visit our Ebscohost Ebook page for details.

If my item is due on a Friday would it be considered late if I returned it in the outdoor bookdrop after the library closes at 5:30 on Friday?
Items returned before midnight on the date they are due are considered returned on time. Our drive-up book drop is open 24 hours a day.

If an item in the library catalog is showing "Available" on the Bookmobile, can I assume it is on the Bookmobile when it visits my neighborhood?
Even when the online catalog shows that the Bookmobile copy of an item is available, that does not always mean the item is available ON the bookmobile. A significant percentage of our Bookmobile collection is in our storeroom (at the Main Library) because we do not have enough space on the Bookmobile to carry our entire Bookmobile collection at one time.

If you want to make sure an item is available on the Bookmobile when it visits your area feel free to reserve the item at least one day in advance of your stop. This may be done online in the catalog (make sure to choose "Bookmobile" as the pickup location) or by phone at 507.328.2305.

Conversely, if you're at the Main Library and see a Bookmobile copy "available", you can always check with the staff at the Fiction, Movies & Music desk on first floor to see if the available copy is in the Bookmobile storeroom (or the Bookmobile itself if it is not out on the road) so you can check it out the same day.
