Library Computers
The library has 26 Internet Computers and 3 Word Processing Computers (not connected to the internet) available for public use. The Adult Internet and Young Adult Internet computers also have Word Processing software installed.
Location
Internet Computers for Adults are found on the second floor. Internet Computers for Young Adults and Children are located on the first floor. Word Processing Computers are located on the second floor near the Adult Internet Computers.
Internet Computers
All Internet Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You need a Rochester/SELCO library card in good standing to log onto library Internet Computers. Visitors may get a Guest Pass to use the Internet Computers with a picture ID.
All patrons will be assigned to age-appropriate Internet Computer section (Adult, Young Adult, or Child):
Adults (18+ years old): There are 16 Adult Internet Computers located on second floor
of the library. Among these computers is one 15-minute "Express" station and one station with access to a scanner. All have Office 2007 (including Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint) installed.
Young Adults (12-17 years old): There are 6 internet stations in the Young Adult (YA) area of the library. These computers have Office 2007 (including Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint) installed.
Children (under 13 years old): There are 4 interent computers in the Children's section. The children's section also includes 4 computers for playing games (which do not require a library card to use).
Internet Computer Time Limits: Each person gets 60 minutes for their initial session at an Internet Computer. On Sundays (and Saturdays during the summer), each person is limited to 30 minutes in their intial session (because of the shorter library hours). If there is no one waiting for a computer after you finish your initial session, your time may be extended up to a total of 90 minutes per day. All patrons are limited to a total of 90 minutes per day.
Word Processing Computers
There are 3 Word Processing Computers on the second floor of the library. These computers do not require a library card to use and have no time limits as long as no one else is waiting to use them. All three computers have Microsoft Office 2007
software installed (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher).
One of these Word Processing Computers is connected to a scanner. This computer also has Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 installed for photo editing.
None of the Word Processing Computers are connected to the internet, so bringing your own flash drive to save your work is recommended. The library has 2GB flash drives available for purchase at the Public Service desk on first floor for $10.00.
Printing from Library Computers
You may print from any computer in the library (including the catalog computers). Print fees are $0.10 per sheet of paper printed with
black ink and $0.25 per sheet of paper printed with color ink. Before you send your print job to the printer, be sure to select the correct setting (for color or b/w).
All print jobs are sent to shared printers in the library. Black and white print jobs will be sent to the printer nearest the computer you are using. All color print jobs will be sent to the printer on the second floor. Print jobs will not begin printing until you go to the print station, select your job from the print station monitor, and put the appropriate money in the machine to pay for your print job.
Scanners
There are five scanners available for public use at the library including four standard scanners and one specialized book scanner. All scanners are located on the second floor of the library as follows:
One standard scanner is connected to our Word Processing Computer on the second floor. This computer is not connected to the internet, so if you are intending to save your scan, you will need to bring a device (such as a flash drive) to save your work. The library has flash drives available for purchase at the Public Service desk on first floor. This computer also has the photo editing program Photoshop Elements 5.0 installed on it.
There are three additional scanners available on the Adult Internet Computers "G", "I", "K" on the second floor. Please note that you need to make a specific reservation for an internet computer with a scanner when you sign up for an internet reservation.
There is a specialized book scanner available on the second floor (the glass scanning area runs to the very edge of the machine, so you can scan the page of a book without laying the entire book out flat). This machine is not connected to the internet and requires a flash drive in order to save your work.
Wireless internet access
For those with wireless devices and personal laptops, a high speed wireless connection is available. No fee is charged, but first time users will need to create an account to login. For further information about library wireless, please read this brochure. Users are expected to comply with the wireless policy.
Wireless printing
Setting up your laptop for printing at the Library
Wireless printing is available for computers running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Currently we are unable to offer wireless printing for Mac computers.
In order to send your document to the Library printer, you must first install a program on your computer called a printer driver. This will enable your computer to "talk" to the Library's printer. Click here to install printer driver. Once the program opens, choose "Run".
Once the printer driver is installed, if you want to print in Black & White, choose "2nd Floor Black and White Xerox" from the printer list ($0.10/page). If you want to print in Color, choose "2nd Floor Color" from the list ($0.25/page).
Click HERE for instructions on how to make sure the printer is set correctly.
